Welcome to the SMBUA

The SMBUA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to recruiting, training, and supporting baseball umpires across Southeastern Massachusetts.
We prepare umpires for high school–level mechanics, rules knowledge, and game management, ensuring they are confident and ready for the season each April through June.

Primary Mission:
To develop knowledgeable, professional umpires who serve local schools, youth programs, and the baseball community with integrity and consistency.


Become an Umpire

No experience needed — we train you from the ground up.

Umpiring is perfect for:

  • Adults looking for a flexible side income
  • Former players wanting to stay close to the game
  • Coaches interested in seeing baseball from a new angle
  • Young adults (18+) wanting responsibility and leadership experience

Training & Certification (January – March)

SMBUA runs a structured training program each winter to prepare umpires for the high school season.

Your training includes:

  • Full NFHS rulebook instruction classes
  • 2-man mechanics system training
  • Plate and base positioning drills
  • Game management, safety, and communication
  • Evaluations and scrimmage opportunities

Training Goals:

  • Prepare candidates to pass high school certification exams
  • Ensure umpires are polished for opening day in April
  • Build confidence and consistency for real-game environments
